BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team got back on the winning track this week with a 71-50 win over Kent Island after falling to unbeaten Mardela last week.
Against Mardela last week, the Seahawks got off to a quick start and led early, 9-4, before the unbeaten Warriors got on track. Mardela cut the lead to 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, then went on a big roll in the second to gain some separation from Decatur. The Warriors reeled off a 10-0 run in the second quarter and the Seahawks had trouble getting shots to fall for a large portion of the quarter.
When the 10-0 run was halted, Mardela led Decatur, 20-11. The Seahawks regrouped, however, in the later part of the second quarter and cut the lead to a manageable 24-18 at the intermission. Decatur scored the first basket of the third quarter to cut the lead to 24-20, but that was as close as the Seahawks would get. Mardela made their shots when it counted the most in the second half and cruised to the 47-39 win. Abby Schorr led Decatur with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Seahawks rebounded this week with a 71-50 win over Kent Island at home on Monday. With the win, Decatur’s record improved to 3-1 overall including a 2-1 mark in the Bayside South.
