BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the Archbishop Spalding Cavalier Duals last weekend, finishing fourth out of the field of 18 of the top wrestling programs in the region.
The Seahawks swept through their early matches to win their pool and advance to the championship round. Decatur beat traditional wrestling powerhouse Old Mill, 37-33, swept past AACS, 64-15, and routed George Mason of Virginia, 79-0, to go 3-0 in the early rounds and won “Pool C” to advance.
The Seahawks then beat Broadneck, 43-25, and Arundel, 57-12, to advance to the tournament’s final four. However, Decatur ran into a couple of tough teams in the championship rounds, losing to Methacon, 44-28, in the first semifinal before falling to River Hill, 37-33, in the third-place match. Host Spalding beat Methacon in the finals to win the tournament.
In the loss to Methacon in the tournament’s semifinals, Cody Bush won by pin at 119, Seth Goggin won by technical fall at 130, Nick McLoota won by technical fall at 135, and Johnny Soghomonian won by pin at 152. In the third-place match loss to River Hill, Mike Meekins won by decision at 215, Matt Meekins won by pin at 112, Bush won by pin at 119, Goggin won by pin at 135, McLoota won by decision at 140, Soghomonian won by pin at 160 and Brandon Terlizzi won by decision at 171.
The Seahawks host Queen Anne’s this afternoon and will host Kent Island next Wednesday. Next weekend, Decatur will compete in the Hartford Tech Duals.
