OCEAN CITY- The Greene Turtle boys' elite travel lacrosse team is looking to reload for the 2010 season with tryouts slated for tomorrow on the stadium field at Salisbury University.
The Greene Turtle club, made up of some of the top high school lacrosse players from across the Eastern Shore, including many from right here in the Ocean City and Berlin areas from schools like Decatur and Worcester Prep, will hold tryouts for the 2010 campaign tomorrow at Salisbury University. The tryouts are open to young players ages 11-7 and will ultimately be divided into several team classifications including high school A and B, junior varsity A and B, and under-15 teams.
The tryouts will be held under the direction of Matt McGinness, who returned to the area as assistant athletic director for Salisbury University in 2008. McGinness graduated from Salisbury University in 1997 and served as an assistant coach for the Seagulls under head coach Jim Berkman for the 2002 and national championship winning 2003 team.
From there, McGinness moved on to become head coach at Denison for the last four years before returning to Salisbury University as the assistant athletic director. In three years as head coach at Denison, McGinness compiled a 35-13 record with two conference championships and three NCAA tournament appearances. Under McGinness' direction, Denison went 14-3 in 2008 and finished ranked 12th in the country.
McGinness will bring his impressive resume to the Greene Turtle tryouts at Salisbury University tomorrow. The Greene Turtle elite team was formed about four years ago to showcase some of the top young lacrosse talent on the shore to get some exposure for the players in front of college coaches in the region. The team plays in several high-end state and regional tournaments throughout the year. The tryouts are scheduled for tomorrow, January 16, at the stadium at Salisbury University from noon to 3 p.m.
