BERLIN- After playing together as teammates from youth lacrosse through high school, two Stephen Decatur standouts will soon compete as rivals at the next level after each signed letters of commitment to two universities last week.
Last Friday, Stephen Decatur varsity lacrosse all-everything midfielder Ashley Trice signed a letter of commitment to attend and play lacrosse at Furman University in South Carolina next year. Teammate Skylar Siegfried, a stalwart goalkeeper for the Seahawks last year after transferring from Worcester Prep, signed a letter of commitment to attend school and play lacrosse at Jacksonville University in Florida next year during the same letter-signing ceremony.
Trice and Siegfried have played together for several years, starting with the Beach Lacrosse program, later the Greene Turtle Lacrosse Club and finally at Decatur. After their senior seasons at Decatur this spring, the two standouts will become familiar rivals as both of the schools they have chosen play in the fledgling 10-member Atlantic Sun Conference.
Trice is a starting midfielder at Decatur and was MVP and First Team All-Bayside Conference the last two years. She has been an integral part of the successful Seahawk program, which reached the state semifinals in both 2010 and 2011 and was region runner-up last year. She also played for the U.S. Lacrosse national team this summer representing the Delmarva region, which won their division. Trice also played volleyball at Decatur the last four years and was team MVP and All-Bayside Conference this year.
Siegfried transferred to Decatur from Worcester Prep after her sophomore year and was dominant in the net for the Seahawks last year. She verbally committed to Jacksonville as a sophomore and officially signed her letter of intent to the Florida school last Friday during a ceremony at Decatur.
