Mallards Finish First Half at .500 Mark

12/24/2010 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity basketball team had an up-and-down first half of the season and take a .500 record in the holiday break with a lot more action scheduled in the second half.

The Mallards finished up their first leg of the season with a 4-4 record and showed signs of promise at time despite the .500 record. Worcester rolled past Wye River, 44-7, in the season opener and followed that win with an impressive 56-41 victory over Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference rival Gunston.

The Mallards then lost two straight including a 50-39 loss to Holly Grove followed by a narrow 52-49 loss to ESIAC rival Salisbury School. Worcester got back in the win column with a 62-28 shellacking of Greenwood Mennonite and stayed on a mini-roll with a dramatic 58-56 win over Delmar in double overtime.

The win streak was short-lived, however, as the Mallards lost their last two games before the mid-season break. On December 9, Worcester lost to Salisbury Christian, 38-28, and dropped their last game of the first half of the season, 41-22, to Central Christian School of Dover, last Tuesday.

The Mallards are now idle until after the first of the new year. They open the second half of the season with a pair of tough road games against teams they last to in the first half. The Mallards play Holly Grove away on January 5, followed by a tough road game against Salisbury School on January 7.
