Pocomoke Adds to Growing Legacy

12/03/2010 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Pocomoke High School’s girls’ varsity field hockey team added to its growing legacy last week, winning its eighth straight state championship and 18th overall for the small, rural school in the south end of Worcester County.

The Warriors defeated Patterson Mill, 1-0, last week on a goal by Taylor West with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game to clinch Pocomoke’s eighth straight Class 1A state title. Overall, Pocomoke’s varsity field hockey team has now won 18 state championships over the years.

Pound for pound, sport for sport, Pocomoke has to have one of the best high school athletic programs in the state in terms of collecting state championships. Over the years, the Warriors have won 30 state titles in various sports including the impressive run by the field hockey team. The small school of just over 300 students continues to produce highly successful sports teams year after year. In addition to the 30 state titles, Pocomoke sports teams have reached the state finals in various sports 20 other times.

The varsity field hockey team has led the dominance with eight straight state championships and 18 overall. The Warriors have now won the state championship nine times in 10 tries since 2001 and the only time the field hockey team did not with the championship this century was 2002, when it finished as the runner-up. The Warriors’ field hockey team also had a run of five straight state titles in the 1990s and won three state championships in the 1980s.
