BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity soccer team used a three-goal outburst to break a 0-0 tie in the second half for a 3-0 win over Washington on a cold, dreary field on Monday.
The Seahawks remained unbeaten in the Bayside South standings after taking care of the Jaguars on Monday in a steady, cold drizzle at home, but it wasn’t easy. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie at the intermission. Although the first half was played largely Decatur’s offensive end of the field, the Seahawks could not break through and get on the board.
Decatur finally got on the board about seven minutes into the second half. Andrew Ternahan found Nick White who made a couple of nice moves against the Washington defenders and nailed a shot passed the Jaguar keeper to stake the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead.
About 10 minutes later, White returned the favor, assisting Ternahan on a goal to make it 2-0 with about 22 minutes left in the contest. White found an open Ternahan, who was able to elude a couple of Washington defenders and get a one-on-one situation with the keeper. Ternahan beat the Jaguars’ keeper with a goal to put the Seahawks ahead 2-0.
Decatur got its last goal of the game late in the second half with just over four minutes remaining when White scored off a header during an unsettled situation in front of the Washington net. With the win, Decatur improved to 5-0 against Bayside South opponents and 7-2 overall.
