OCEAN CITY - Tragedy struck in Ocean City Thursday afternoon when an SUV struck a mother carrying her 2-year-old daughter while crossing Coastal Highway claiming the lives of both.
At around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, a woman carrying her small child was attempting to cross Coastal Highway at 62nd Street near Route 90 when they were struck by an SUV traveling northbound on the highway. The two-year-old child was transported to AGH and was pronounced dead a short time later. The mother was transported to PRMC in Salisbury and was listed in critical condition initially. She was also pronounced dead a short time later.
The SUV was a registered government vehicle and was being driven by a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. Due to the ongoing investigation, the name of the driver has not been released. The names of the victims are not being released pending the notification of the next of kin. The investigation is ongoing, however, there are no charges pending at this time.
Last night, OCPD officials said the names of the victims and the driver will likely be released sometime this afternoon.
