Thursday, July 30-Local Killed Trying To Cross Route 50

7/24/2009 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN - Tragedy struck this week when an elderly local woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Route 50 on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 2:20 p.m., Maryland State Police responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on eastbound Route 50 just west of Jerry Mack Rd. The investigation revealed a 2006 Toyota operated by Mary Rogers Cavey, 78, of Berlin, had attempted to enter the eastbound lanes of Route 50 in an attempt to cross over to the westbound lanes and pulled into the path of a 2007 Nissan van driven by Susan Gayle Yaruta, 54, of Huntington, Pa.

The two vehicles collided with the eastbound van striking the Toyota at the driver's side door. Cavey was fatally injured in the collision. No charges have been filed and the investigation continues.

The accident occurred just around the same time a strong band of severe thunderstorms moved through the area with heavy downpours, strong winds and hail, although there is no indication the severe weather played any role in the collision in terms of visibility. The accident did close the eastbound lanes of Route 50 for a while on Tuesday afternoon.

Check back tomorrow morning for all the week's news in the updated issue of The Dispatch and its online partner at www.mdcoastdispatch.com.
