Berlin Dolphins Clinch Playoff Spot

11/14/2008 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- One day after Stephen Decatur's varsity football team beat county rival Snow Hill, 35-23, to advance to the state playoffs, the teams' younger counterparts, the Berlin Dolphins of the Salvation Army Youth League, also beat Snow Hill to secure its own post-season fate.

The Berlin Dolphins faced the Snow Hill Eagles last Saturday in a Salvation Army 'Red Shield' Youth Football League showdown and won 13-6 to clinch the second-seed in the playoffs.

Snow Hill scored first in the grudge match with a one-yard touchdown run to take a 6-0 lead, but Berlin answered on just its second offensive play on a 46-yard touchdown run by James Mapp. The extra point was good and Berlin led 7-6.

Finally, with less than four minutes remaining in the game, Berlin's Colin Macomber connected with Henry Hastings on a 46-yard touchdown pass, giving the Dolphins a 13-6 win. With its seventh straight win, Berlin clinched the two-seed in the playoffs and will face Snow Hill again.
