OCEAN CITY- The second round of the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department’s Fall Flag Football League took a dramatic turn this week when Kirby’s Pub upset top-seeded and unbeaten Seacrets, 18-13, on Monday.
Seacrets finished the season with an 8-0 record and the top seed in the playoffs, but Kirby’s sent the regular season champs back to the loser’s bracket. The other top-seed, Schell Brothers/Greene Turtle survived a scare of its own with a narrow 20-19 win over Buxy’s Salty Dog. The following is a quick look at some of this week’s playoff action:
(bullet) Kirby’s Pub 18- Seacrets 13: Kirby’s got on the board first with a 23-yard TD pass from Barry Snowden to Justin Fiedler, but Seacrets countered with two touchdowns of its own on a 26-yard TD pass from Ryan Gartland to Antwine Purnell and a four-yard TD run by Gartland to take a 13-6 lead. Kirby’s cut the lead to 13-12 on a two-yard pass from Snowden to Anthony Arellano and took the lead on a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jeremy Harris. Laate in the game, Kirby’s defense stopped Seacrets on four plays inside the 20-yard line to secure the win.
(bullet) Schell Brothers/Greene Turtle 20-Buxy’s Salty Dog 19: SB/GT scored first on a 27-yard TD pass from Eric Givens to Ron Strickler, but Buxy’s answered with a three-yard TD pass from D.J. Draus to Justin Howarth to tie the game at 7-7. SB/GT built its lead to 20-7 on a five-yard Givens TD pass and a 35-yard interception return by Linwood Harmon who pitched the ball to Joey Pino. However, Buxy’s came back with a 50-yard bomb from Draus to Pat Spicer and a 38-yarder from Draus to Adam Blaney to cut the lead to 20-19. Late in the game, SB/GT converted a key fourth-and-one play to earn a new set of downs and kill to clock to advance.
