BERLIN- Providing further evidence lacrosse is currently the fastest growing sport in the local area and across the Eastern Shore, a new youth recreational program has been formed to meet the growing demand for adequate instruction and playing time for young players in the area.
With the goal of offering another option for young lacrosse players in the area, a group of dedicated and committed parents and local business people have formed the Coastal Lacrosse Club. In its inaugural season, the Coastal Lacrosse Club will be offering league opportunities for boys and girls ages 7-14.
In addition, the program will be volunteering with the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department to provide an early introduction of lacrosse skills for players picking up the sport for the first time, as well as boys and girls in Pre-K to 2nd grade. A U.S. Lacrosse-Level 1-certified coach will lead each team along with other coaches and volunteers.
The Coastal Lacrosse Club is a member of the Delaware Youth Lacrosse Foundation, a regional chapter of U.S. Lacrosse. The mission statement clearly states what the Coastal Lacrosse Club is all about. The club will offer instructional and developmental programs for boys and girls of all ages.
The coaches and volunteers are committed to providing a uniform and organized program, emphasizing the basic and finer skills and strategies of the sport in order to prepare the player to compete at the next level. Players at all skill levels will have the opportunity to develop their game in a positive environment that promotes teamwork, fair play, good sportsmanship and lots of fun.
The season will begin in March of 2009. The club will participate in a 12 game schedule, which will include both home and away games. All games will be played on Sundays. Practices will begin in early March, and will end with an exciting round robin league tournament held at the end of May.
In order to maintain a low player to coach ratio, the club will limit the number of players per team. This will allow coaches to provide more individualized instruction and guarantee playing time to each player on the team. Teams will be formed solely on a first come-first serve basis and are open to players from all areas of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. Divisions will be created based on the total number of registrations received for each age group. Registration for the 2009 spring season is currently being accepted.
