New Storm Sidelines Decatur Wrestlers

2/12/2010 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's red-hot wrestling team has had to cool its jets for the last week or so as a pattern of heavy snowstorms has disrupted the late portion of its 2009-2010 season.

The Seahawks were cruising this season for the most part until a run of postponed matches has left them idle. Decatur last wrestled competitively two weeks ago, a 62-6 win over Kent County. Last Wednesday's scheduled match with Parkside was postponed, as was last Friday's dual meet with Easton and North Caroline.

The pattern continued this week when the state Class 4A-3A dual meet scheduled for Wednesday was wiped out by the latest storm. Decatur entered the dual meet as the number-three seed in the region and was scheduled to face second-seeded Reservoir. Incidentally, an earlier match with Reservoir two weeks ago was wiped out by the first of three storms in the region. On the other side of the regional dual meet, top-seeded South River was set to face off with fourth-seeded Old Mill.

The regional duals will not be held unless each of the four teams in the meet can attend and participate. However, the participating teams were told to prepare to go the next available day. With Wednesday's regional dual meet wiped out, it is uncertain if the four schools in the duals would be able to go on Thursday, but it appeared unlikely given the weather conditions across the state.

The Bayside Championships are scheduled for next Friday, February 19. The state regional meet is scheduled for February 26-27, while the state championships are set for March 5-6.
