Seahawk Girls Suffer 1st Loss of Season

10/05/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team suffered its first loss of the season this week, falling to Parkside, 3-1, on the road on Tuesday to fall to 5-1-1.

The Rams ended the Seahawks’ run at an unbeaten season on Tuesday, beating Decatur, 3-1, on its home field. Going into Tuesday’s grudge match with Bayside South rival Parkside, Decatur was 5-0-1 on the season, its only blemish a 1-1 tie with Queen Anne’s back on September 14.

The Seahawks were on a major roll, having beat their last three opponents by a combined score of 20-1 going into Tuesday’s game with Parkside. Decatur beat Snow Hill by a score of 9-1; blanking Bennett, 3-0; and routing Mardela, 8-0, last week. In the Mardela rout, Jillian Petito and Brittney Calandra led Decatur with two goals each, while Alex Pinto, Ashley Calandra, Jenna Leitged and Rebecca Lederman each scored single goals.

Decatur now hits the road for its next two games including Wicomico next Tuesday and Bennett next Friday before returning home against Kent Island on October 15. The Seahawks will get a shot at revenge when they host Parkside on October 16 before wrapping the regular season with a home game against Wicomico.
