Seahawk Track Teams Fare Well at States

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's boys' and girls' varsity indoor track teams made a respectable showing this week at the Class 3A indoor track championships in their first state meet since moving up to a higher class.

Like all other Decatur sports teams, the indoor track teams made the leap this year from Class 2A to Class 3A because of increased enrollment at the Berlin school. And like all of the other Seahawk sports teams with few exceptions, the indoor track athletes found the level of competition much higher against some of the bigger schools on the other side of the Chesapeake.

Nonetheless, the Seahawk track teams acquitted themselves well at the Class 3A meet this week, turning in a respectable 22^nd ranking as a team and placing in several events as individuals. The boys' and girls' teams also set a couple of school records in the process.

The best finish on the day for any Decatur track athlete came in the women's 3,200, where standout Seahawk runner Lindsay Chetelat finished fourth among all of the competitors in the race to collect four team points. Chetelat was also part of a Seahawk team in the 4x800 relay that came in fifth among some of the top schools in the state.

Joining Chetelat on the fifth-place relay team was Lauren Cosgriff, Bradley Janson and Katherine Janson. The Seahawk girls' also finished 11^th in the 4x400 relay. Katherine Janson collected an individual honor with a 12^th place finish in the women's 800.

On the men's side, a Decatur team led by Pat Hooks and Logan West finished fifth in the 4x400 relay, collecting one point for the team score. In terms of individual honors on the men's side, Decatur's Matt Allenbaugh cleared 11-feet in the pole vault competition to finish in 6^th place and collect two points for his team's score. Seahawk Max Hulme also performed well in the high jump, topping out at 5 feet-6 inches to finish 9^th in the competition.
