Carter Takes Lead Among Drivers

6/27/2008 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- The summer-long live meet at Ocean Downs continued last weekend with William Carter taking the early lead in the driver's standings with three more wins last Sunday night to increase his total to seven after just four nights of live racing.

Carter drove 11-year-old gelding Rainpan to victory on Sunday and followed that with another win behind Night's Winemaker, another 11-year-old. His final win of the night last Sunday came behind four-year-old mare Attitune, which won her maiden start. Carter's win total for the early meet now stands at seven.

Not far behind Carter in the driver's standings is veteran Wayne Long, who led after the first week with four wins on Sunday, June 15. Long added his fifth win of the season at Ocean Downs last Sunday with a victory in the final race behind eight-year-old gelding FOB Watch N.

Another driver with five wins posted already this season is track favorite Ray 'Shorty' Robinson, Jr., who collected two more wins on Sunday to stay in the hunt in the driver's standings. Robinson raced to victory behind Ring of Honour and Shesanamericapangirl on Sunday.

After four nights of live racing, William Carter and Joseph Eisenhower, Sr. are tied for the lead in the trainer's standings with three wins each. Charlene Polk and William Long have each collected two wins as trainers thus far in the 2008 live meet.

The live racing schedule expanded to four days a week this week with the addition of Wednesday and Thursday. Live racing is now held every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for the rest of the 40-day 2008 meet which concludes on August 24. First post is 7:35 p.m. each night of live racing.
