Decatur Earns Sportsmanship Award

10/23/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's sports program hung a banner of a different sort last week after being honored with the Bayside South Conference Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year.

The Bayside South, comprised of all of the public school sports programs in Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset Counties, each year hands out a Sportsmanship Award to the school that best represents all that is positive in high school sports. The award committee that determines the recipient each year collects feedback from all nine schools in the conference, ranking each on the overall atmosphere, supervision, participation and even the spectators for every sport during each season.

The school with the highest ranking, as voted on by the other eight schools, earns the distinction. This year, Decatur's peers in the Bayside South honored the school with the Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year. Prior to last year, Decatur had never won the award. Principal Lou Taylor, who last week accepted the banner from Bayside South Athletic Conference president Alan Miller, praised his student-athletes, coaches, parents and fans for contributing to the award.

'We are extremely proud of this recognition as we believe it is truly demonstrative of the values our school seeks to promote in sports,' he said.
