BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's golf team completed a memorable regular season last week with a pair of matches two days apart at the River Marsh Golf Club at the Hyatt in Cambridge, sweeping both the Bayside Conference and Maryland District VIII championships to finish at 10-1.
The big week started last Tuesday when the Seahawks shot a team low 322 to come out first among the 18 Bayside Conference schools in the tournament at River Marsh. Easton finished second last Tuesday with a team score of 351, while Queen Anne's was third at 357 and Parkside was fourth at 358. On Tuesday, Decatur's Connor Gebhart shot the tournament's low round at 79, while Nikki Rafer was the top female finisher at 94.
On Thursday, the Seahawks were back at it again at River Marsh against the same basic field and completed the sweep of the Bayside and District VIII championships. Again, the Seahawks came in with the low team score at 325, followed this time by Easton at 344 and Parkside at 346. On Thursday, Seahawk Jake Miller, ranked number-one in the conference, was the top finisher for Decatur and third overall in the tournament with a round of 80. Rafer shot a nice 82 to win the girls' individual medal.
With the team score of 325 on Thursday, Decatur easily shot lower than the maximum score of 340 needed to earn a spot in the field for the state championship tournament in Southern Maryland next week. Miller, Rafer, Joe Iacona and Tyler Sauter will represent the Seahawks in the state championships. In addition, Decatur's Kate Kotoski earned a berth in the girls' individual state tournament.
The Seahawks will compete in the state Class 4A-3A tournament at the Potomac Ridge Golf Club in Waldorf in Charles County beginning on Monday.
