Parkside Edges Seahawk Girls, 14-13

4/01/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Something had to give when Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team hosted Bayside South rival Parkside on a dreary Wednesday afternoon this week, and it was the Rams that fired the last salvo in a dramatic 14-13 win.

Decatur jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Parkside and its offensive catalyst Brie Custis got cranked up. Custis scored two goals to tie the game and start a five-goal run for the Rams to take a 5-2 lead. Decatur’s own offensive catalyst Leigh Anne Flounlacker stopped the bleeding with a goal with just over nine minutes left in the half to cut the lead to 5-3, but Parkside took at 7-5 lead into intermission.

Parkside scored early in the second to extend the lead to 8-5, but Decatur continued to battle back. With the score tied at 11-11 with just over seven minutes left, Flounlacker gave the Seahawks their first lead since way back in the first few minutes of the game with a goal to go ahead 12-11. After Parkside tied the game at 12-12, Decatur’s Lauren Holloway found the back of the net to give the Seahawks a 13-12 lead with 2:20 remaining.

However, Custis found Logan Bounds on the crease and the sophomore converted the assist to tie the game at 13-13 with under a minute remaining. Parkside won the ensuing draw and worked the ball around the perimeter as the clock clicked down before Custis weaved through the defense for her game winning shot as time expired.
