Wrestling Registration On Tap

11/07/2008 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- The Worcester County Youth Wrestling Program is hosting open registration for young wrestlers in grades K-8 next week at Stephen Decatur High School.

With football season winding down, many young area athletes are turning toward inside activities for the winter and the Worcester County Youth Wrestling Program is a great option. Formed seven years ago to create a local youth wrestling feeder program for Stephen Decatur, the team has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years under the direction of Seahawk Coach Kevin Gilligan and his group of talented coaches.

As a result, the high school program has grown as well, becoming a powerhouse on the Eastern Shore and a force to be reckoned with across the state and throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Last year, Seahawk Skylar Snead became the first graduate of the Worcester County Youth Wrestling to win a state championship for Decatur and only the third in school history, but with the growth of the program on the youth level, state titles will likely become commonplace in the future.

This year, the youth program intends to split the team into two groups so first-year, less experienced wrestlers can learn the basics and compete with young athletes at their own skill level in various novice tournaments. The more experienced athletes will practice and compete together during tournament season throughout the area.

Open registration for the wrestling program will be held next week on Monday-Wednesday, November 11-12. Practices will be held each day in the Stephen Decatur High School wrestling room from 6-7:30 p.m. each night. For more information, contact Coach Steven Rosenblatt at (410) 218-3484.
