BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team closed out its 2011-2012 campaign with a 61-47 loss to Mount Hebron in the first round of the state Class 3A-East region tournament, but the loss did little to tarnish what was another successful season for the Seahawks.
Decatur entered the Class 3A-East region tournament as the number-five seed and fell to Mount Hebron (12) in the first round last Friday, 61-47. Just as she had for much of the season, Abby Schorr led the Seahawks with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Purnell also pitched in with 16 points.
With the loss, the Decatur girls closed out the season with an 11-12 overall record, but the Seahawks played well down the stretch. Decatur won six of its last seven games including six in a row before falling to Parkside in the regular season finale. Decatur was also streaky during the season, with a four-game losing streak in the middle of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Bennett, the Bayside Conference’s other 3A-East team, beat Wild Lake, 53-48, to advance. In the 2A-East bracket, which is divided into sectionals because of the number of teams, Wicomico (4) beat Easton, 53-29, to advance, while Parkside (6) beat North Caroline (3) to advance.
