Seahawks Continue Dramatic Wins

4/20/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team won a couple of big games on the road against tough Bayside North teams this week, both coming after late comebacks, to improve to 7-1 on the season.

The Seahawks have shown a propensity for cranking up the offense when it has mattered most all season and a couple of wins on the road illustrated the team’s late dramatics. Decatur beat always tough Queen Anne’s, 9-6, last Wednesday after coming from behind late, and followed the same formula against Easton in an 11-9 win on Monday. Sandwiched in between was a relatively drama-free 14-6 win over North Caroline.

The game against Queen Anne’s last Wednesday featured six ties and three lead changes. The Lions led 6-5 after three quarters before Decatur went on a 4-0 run in the fourth to secure the 9-6 win. Curtis Snyder led Decatur with three goals.

Against Easton on Monday on the road, Decatur trailed 4-1 late in the first quarter before cutting the lead to 4-3 at the end of the period. The Warriors expanded their lead to 6-3 before late goals by Snyder, Erik Geiser and Corey Gwin tied the score at 6-6 at halftime.

In the third, Easton again appeared to take control of the game, building its lead to 9-6 as the quarter expired. The never-say-die Seahawks then went on a big, five-goal run to claim the dramatic 11-9 win. Gwin scored just 35 second into the fourth to cut the lead to 9-7. Nineteen seconds later, Andrew Ternahan scored to inch closer at 9-8. Snyder then scored his fourth goal of the game to even the score at 9-9 with just over seven minutes remaining.

Snyder scored his fifth and final goal of the game at the 4:30 mark in the fourth to give the Seahawks the lead, 10-9. Ternahan added an insurance goal at 2:07 to extend the lead to 11-9, giving Decatur its fifth win in a row and improving the Seahawks’ record to 7-1 on the season.
