OCEAN CITY- A handful of fitness events and races are set for this weekend in and around the resort area culminating with the 4th Annual Assateague Assault Triathlon on Sunday.
Sponsored by OC Tri-Running, the events get started tomorrow morning, June 2, with the Ocean City Boardwalk 5-Mile Run. The race begins at the Boardwalk Arch at North Division Street at 7:30 a.m. There is an hour-and-a-half time limit to qualify for official timing. Registration for the even opens near the start area at 7:10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Later on Saturday, OC Tri-Running is hosting its second event in the weekend-long series with the Assateague Island One-Mile Sunset Swim. The event is being held tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. Participants will compete in a one-mile ocean swim in the Atlantic just off the coast of the Assateague Island State Park.
Finally, the series culminates on Sunday morning with the 4th Annual Assateague Assault Triathlon. The sprint distance triathlon includes a half-mile ocean swim, followed by a 13.7-mile bike ride across the Verazzano Bridge and north on Route 611 to a designated turnaround point before returning to Assateague. The final leg is a 3.1-mile run over a flat island course to the finish line. Last year, 650 participants competed in the event, the field for which was expanded this year to accommodate more racers.
