Decatur Boys Drop Bayside Title Game

10/26/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

SALISBURY- The Stephen Decatur boys’ varsity soccer team’s dream of repeating as Bayside Conference championship ended on Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to Queen Anne’s in the title game at Wicomico County Stadium on Tuesday.

The Seahawks won the Bayside Conference championship last year, beating Kent Island, 2-0, in the title game. With largely the same nucleus of players returning, along with a corps of talented newcomers, the Seahawks went 10-2 in the regular season and won their last eight games to win the Bayside South title again this year, but fell to Queen Anne’s, 2-0, on Tuesday in the title game.

Queen Anne’s handed Decatur one of its two regular season losses back in September and the Seahawks hadn’t figured out the Lions again on Tuesday. Queen Anne’s scored first just seven minutes into the title game and added a second goal eight minutes later for a 2-0 lead. That was all the Lions needed as Decatur could not break through on offense.

The Seahawks turned up the pressure in the second half and had a few opportunities, but could not get the needed extra pass or open look to get on the scoreboard. Queen Anne’s got the early 2-0 lead and packed it in on defense the rest of the way to cruise to the 2-0 win in the title game.
