BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's men's varsity lacrosse team took an early exit from the state playoffs last Friday, losing a heartbreaker to visiting Annapolis, 12-11, in overtime in front of a big crowd at home.
Decatur entered the game as the number-two seed in the state's Class 3A-2A East Region tournament after finishing the regular season with a 12-1 record including the Seahawks first-ever Bayside Conference championship. Looming on the other side of the bracket was top-seeded Kent Island, which had handed the Seahawks their only loss of the season back in April.
However, before Decatur could get another crack at Kent Island for a possible regional championship, the Seahawks had some unfinished business to take care of. Annapolis came to Decatur as the number-seven seed in the Class 3A-2A East region quarterfinals with an 8-6 record, but the Seahawks certainly didn't take them lightly.
The two teams played a knock down, drag out game for 60 minutes that finished in an 11-11 tie at the end of regulation. Both teams had opportunities in the overtime period, but Annapolis scored on an unassisted goal by Nate Poerstel with just 2:53 left in the first overtime to steal the upset win and close out the Seahawks' season.
