BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity golf team captured the District VIII championship, finishing first in the field of nine teams with a combined 320 to earn a spot in the team competition at the state tournament, which gets underway next week.
Decatur entered the nine-team district match at the River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge needing a combined 340 to qualify for the state Class 4A/3A tournament next week. The four-player team made up of Kevin McNelis, Jake Miller, Jenny Sullivan and Connor Gebhart easily eclipsed that mark, shooting a combined 320 to capture the District VIII title and advance to the state tournament in Southern Maryland next week.
The Seahawks, led by Kevin McNelis' 76, shot a combined 320 to take the District VIII title and earn a spot as the lone representative from the district in the Class 4A/3A tournament. Parkside will compete in the Class 3A/2A tournament. Jake Miller shot a 79 for the Seahawks, while Jenny Sullivan finished at 81 and Connor Gebhart shot an 84 to round out the scoring for the Seahawks. Two Decatur female golfers, Nikki Rafer, who shot an 89 on Tuesday, and Susan Dillon, who finished at 95, qualified for the state semifinal tournament as individuals.
