Former Seahawk Miller a Starter at Navy

11/13/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Former Stephen Decatur wrestling standout Danny Miller was recently named the starter in the heavyweight class as a freshman at the U.S. Naval Academy and last week justified the program's early confidence in him by winning his first match and placing fourth overall in his first competition on the college level.

Miller, who won three state championships at Decatur wrestling in the 189-pound class, added about 35 pounds of muscle after high school to move up to the heavyweight class at the college level at Navy. Miller was rewarded for his hard work with the starter's role for the Middies in the heavyweight division and won his first match ever last week at the Eastern Michigan Open.

Miller won his opening match in a 12-2 decision over Harold White of Illinois finished with a 3-2 record in his college debut. He was one of six Navy wrestlers to finish in the top four in their respective weight classes in the Eastern Michigan Open.
