OCEAN CITY - Two explosive devices were discovered on the beach in Ocean City last weekend, likely deposited there by recent storm activity, marking the second time in as many weeks a potentially dangerous device was found in the sand in the resort.
Early last Saturday morning, Ocean City Police along with the Ocean City Fire Marshal's Office Bomb Squad responded to two different areas on the beach in reference to possible unexploded military ordnances. In both cases, investigators determined the explosive devices washed up due to recent storm activity.
Bomb squad members safely recovered both items and determined they were unexploded U.S. military ordnance. The devices were clearly marked 'Caution-Do Not Touch-Explosive.' The devices were removed from the beach and rendered safe, although it is not certain how it was accomplished. When explosive devices have been found in the resort in the past, they have typically been transported to a remote location near the municipal airport in West Ocean City and destroyed.
The discovery of the unexploded military ordnance on the beach last Saturday came just five days after a similar discovery. On Sept. 22, an individual using a metal detector on the beach in front of the Atlantis condominium found an explosive device later identified as an improvised hand grenade in the sand.
