Coleman Christmas Tourney Underway

12/28/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur and Worcester’s two other public high schools this week are competing in the annual John Coleman Christmas Tournament, which got underway last night and concludes today with games all over the county.

The annual tournament, named for long-time Worcester County Public Schools Administrator John Coleman, has become one of the highlights of the holiday basketball tournament schedule over the years although its configuration has been altered several times. For years, the Coleman Tournament featured the boys and girls varsity teams from the three Worcester County public schools, with three at-large invitees with the host site rotating between Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke.

For a few years, the tournament alternated between an all-boys event to an all-girls tournament. This year, the three county schools’ girls’ varsity teams will compete with at-large invitee Northampton in a round robin format. Decatur played Snow Hill last night in a game played too late to be included in this edition. The Seahawks will host Pocomoke in the second round today at home at 5:30 p.m. Snow Hill will play Northampton today in the second round.
