Decatur Sending Seven to State Meet

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity outdoor track teams finished off another remarkable season last week with fine showings in the state regional championship meet with several athletes qualifying for the state championship meet this weekend at Morgan University in Baltimore.

The Decatur boys finished fifth out of all of the Class 3A-East teams competing from around Maryland with 55 total team points. The Seahawks girls also fared well, finishing in eighth place in the Class 3A-East region meet.

On the boys’ side, Chris David finished fourth in the 400, while Lance Ward finished third in the 800. Greg Petersen was second in the 110 hurdles, while Spenser Cardenas was third. Petersen was also fifth in the region in the 300 hurdles. The Decatur boys also did well in the relays, finishing fifth in the 4x800 and sixth in the 4x400.

In the field events, Tyheam Purnell won the region championship in the discus and Nick Craven won the region championship in the shot put. Purnell also finished fifth in the shot put. Petersen was fourth in the high jump, while Lucas Duker was 9th. Zach Watters finished eighth in the pole vault.

On the girls’ side, Ravyn Saunders was ninth in the 500, while Chloe FauntLeroy was eighth in the 800 and fourth in the 1,600. Jessica Galuardi was fifth in the 100 hurdles and 10th in the 300 hurdles. The Decatur girls finished fifth in the 4x100, seventh in the 4x200, eighth in the 4x400 and seventh in the 4x800.

In the field events, Katrina Purnell won the region championship in the long jump and finished second in the triple jump and fourth in the high jump. Ravyn Saunders was seventh in the high jump. Kacie Moore was fifth in the pole vault, while Ashley Hrebik was sixth. Ameerah Lewis was fifth in the shot put, while Antonia Green was ninth.

With the strong performance in the region meet, Decatur is sending several athletes to the state championship meet this weekend. On the boys’ side, David will compete in the 400, Ward will compete in the 800 and Petersen and Cardenas will compete in the 110 hurdles. Petersen will also compete in the high jump, while Craven will represent the Seahawks in the shot put and Purnell will compete in the discus. On the girls’ side, Purnell will represent Decatur in the high jump, triple jump and long jump, while FauntLeroy will compete in the 1,600.
