Seahawks Earn Post-Season Honors

12/10/2010 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- After a near-perfect regular season and a high seed in the state playoffs, Stephen Decatur’s varsity volleyball team was rewarded with several post-season honors including a Bayside South Co-Conference Player of the Year award for senior Catherine Winters.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 13-0 record, including a 10-0 mark in the Bayside South, before a late season loss to Kent Island. Nonetheless, Decatur finished the regular season with a 14-1 mark and earned a two-seed in the state Class 3A-East tournament. The Seahawks eventually bowed out of the state tournament with a loss to Reservoir in the quarterfinals.

After another outstanding season under Coach Bertha Ortiz, the Seahawks were rewarded with several post-season honors including a Co-Player of the Year Award for Catherine Winters. Winters share the award with Kelly McKenzie of James M. Bennett, which also enjoyed an outstanding season. Decatur seniors Anne Winters and Janet Davidson were also named to the Bayside South All-Conference first team.

Named to the Bayside South All-Conference second-team were Seahawks Holly Melson, Hallee Carr and Makya Purnell. Several Seahawks received All-Conference honorable mentions including Amy Casey, Emlyn Hammer, Abigail Hastings, Lauren Rolleston and Casey Ortiz.
