BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's girls' varsity volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season this week, falling to host Kent Island 3-2 in a five-game marathon decided by a tie-breaker.
The Seahawks have been dominant all season, jumping out to a perfect 13-0 record before Tuesday's loss on the road the Kent Island. In 10 of its 13 matches before Tuesday's loss, the Seahawks had swept their opponents in three straight and had only dropped five individual games all season. However, Kent Island was able to get by Decatur in a nail-biter on Tuesday to end the dream of a perfect season for the Seahawks.
Decatur lost the first game, 25-18, but rebounded in the second game, 26-24, to tie it up. Kent Island won the third game, 25-22, but once again the Seahawks had the answer, beating the Buccaneers, 25-21, in the fourth game. In the decisive fifth game, Kent Island defeated Decatur 15-8.
Holly Melson finished with nine service points and 15 digs in the marathon match, while Lauren Rolleston had 10 service points and eight kills. Catherine Winters and Anne Winters each finished with eight kills and three blocks. The Seahawks wrapped the regular season yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition. The Bayside championship is set for next Wednesday.
