Seahawks Sweep Post-Season Awards

6/12/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity baseball practically swept the Bayside South post-season honors when the awards were announced this week with a co-Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Seahawk senior centerfielder Paul Stortini was named co-Player of the year along with Parkside High's Seth Illian. Stortini was a force all year at the plate, batting a whopping .540 with three home runs. While he was an integral part of the middle of the line-up for Decatur, Stortini was recognized as much for anchoring the staunch Seahawk defense in centerfield all season.

Decatur starter Troy Bennett was also recognized for an outstanding season on the mound with the Bayside South Pitcher of the Year award. Bennett was the heart and soul of a very good Seahawk starting rotation throughout the season. Of course, managing all the talent Decatur had the season was no easy chore and Seahawk manager Rich Ferro was also recognized with as the Bayside South Coach of the Year.

Decatur ran the table in the regular season, going 15-0 while outscoring its opponents 210-37. The Seahawks averaged 14 runs per game while giving up an average of just two runs per game on their way to a perfect season.
