Worcester Boys Wrap Perfect Season

10/23/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Worcester Prep's men's varsity soccer team wrapped up a perfect regular season last Friday, beating Gunston Day at home, 6-2, to finish with an unblemished record.

The Mallards were dominant all year, finishing a perfect 13-0 in a regular season during which they outscored their opponents by a gaudy 74-11. Worcester is now attempting to add a little championship icing to its perfect season cake with the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) tournament.

The Mallards wasted no time jumping out to an early lead against Gunston last Friday. With just over three minutes gone in the first half, freshman Andrew Ternahan got behind the Gunston defense and popped a shot over the Gunston goalkeeper to stake the Mallards to a quick 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Ternahan hit a crossing pass from the corner that found Matt Carey, who converted the assist to stake the Mallards to a 2-0 lead.

Both teams settled down after the early scoring barrage by the Mallards. However, with just over 31 minutes left in the first half, Worcester's Chase Powell launched a bomb from beyond the box that found the back of the net and improved the Mallards' lead to 3-0. Gunston got on the board a short time later with a goal on a corner kick.

However, that was as close as Gunston would get. Ternahan scored again and Carey added another goal to push the Worcester lead to 5-1. Ternahan would add one more goal before the first half ended to complete his hat trick on the day. He also added an assist. Gunston would add a late goal, but the damage had been done and the Mallards completed a perfect regular season.
