SNOW HILL - The proposed downtown amusement overlay tax district, intended to reduce property taxes for Ocean City's historic Trimper's rides and amusement park, is not legal, according to the State of Maryland.
The Worcester County Commissioners took a different tack and voted Tuesday, Feb, 5, to allow county and town tax credits to be offered to the historic amusement park to offset recent skyrocketing property tax assessments, which resulted in much higher property taxes. The overlay tax district would have frozen taxes on the property at the 2004 level while the property remained an amusement park.
Trimper's has said it might close its doors after operating at the south end of the Boardwalk for over 100 years if its tax bill was not reduced.
The commissioners have not worked out the details of the Trimper's tax credit.
