BERLIN- Decatur’s varsity baseball team got a strong performance on the mound and clutch hitting at the plate to blank visiting Wicomico, 9-0, on Opening Day on Wednesday.
Mike O’Neill was dominating at times on Wednesday in the season opener, allowing just four hits and scattering a handful of walks for six shutout innings. O’Neill also contributed at the plate with two doubles, while Teron Tyre added four hits and freshman Justin Meekins, getting the start at shortstop, had two hits, stole a base and scored twice.
Already ahead 3-0 after the first inning, the Seahawks added three more in the fifth inning when Chase Corsey singled in a run and Connor Molloy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Another run scored when a Decatur batter struck out but was safe at first when the ball got by the Indians’ catcher.
Decatur added three more in the bottom of the sixth when Meekins led off with a single and scored on a double by Tyre. Corsey grounded to short, but the WiHi first baseman dropped the ball allowing Tyre to score the eighth run. Corsey scored the final run on a ground out by Steve Ruggierre.
