Holiday Basketball Camp Opens Next Week

6/29/2007 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

OCEAN CITY- With Independence Day right around the corner, the Fourth of July festivities won't be the only fireworks going on at Northside Park in the resort next week as the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department's All-Star basketball camp returns for another year.

The camp, which will be held next week from Monday to Friday, is open to boys and girls ages 7-16. It will provide an opportunity for young players to hone their basketball skills while enjoying the holiday festivities around the park. The camp will be directed by Salisbury University men's basketball coach Steve Holmes with some help from former Stephen Decatur High School standout and professional basketball player Andre Foreman.

'This is a great camp for boys and girls of all ages and abilities,' said OC Recreation and Parks program director Al 'Hondo' Handy. 'Salisbury head coach Steve Holmes and his staff will teach kids new drills and exciting skills that they can take with them on and off the court.'

Not only will children be introduced to kids of the same age and interest, they also play games on each day, compete in individual contests and spend time on important conditioning techniques. Along with an enjoyable atmosphere and improvement of skills, the camp participants will receive a free camp T-shirt, a basketball, a 5x7 picture with the coach, a certificate of completion, numerous giveaways and a pizza party on the last day.

The camp starts Monday, July 2 and lasts until Friday, July 6, with no camp held on Wednesday, July 4. Campers should report to Northside Park at 10 a.m. each day and the camp will run until about 3 p.m. each day. The cost is $116 for residents and $132 for non-residents. For more information about this camp or other camps offered this summer, contact the Recreation and Parks department at (410) 250-0125.
