BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity volleyball team bowed out of the state tournament this week, falling to Reservoir, 3-0, on Monday in the Class 3A-East quarterfinals.
The Seahawks entered the region tournament as the number-two seed and received a first-round bye, while Reservoir came in as the number-seven seed and needed to beat 10th-seeded Northeast in the opening round. On Monday, Reservoir took down the Seahawks in three straight, 25-23, 25-18, and 25-9. Catherine Winters led the way for Decatur with five digs and five kills, while Anne Winters pitched in with four digs and three blocks and Lauren Rolleston added five kills and two blocks.
Monday's early exit from the state tournament was the second loss in a row for the Seahawks and only the third all season. Last week, Decatur fell to Kent Island, 3-1, in the Bayside Championship match. The Seahawks' only other regular season loss also came at the hands of Kent Island back on October 26.
The loss in the state quarterfinals on Monday did little to tarnish what was otherwise another outstanding season for Decatur. The Seahawks jumped out to a perfect 13-0 record before finishing the season at 14-3 including the playoff loss on Monday.
