Seahawks Fall to Buccaneers, 28-14

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team spotted visiting Kent Island 21 points in the first half last week before getting its own offense on track and fell to the Buccaneers, 28-14.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kent Island scored early in the second for a 7-0 lead. With just over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Buccaneers scored again on a two-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 14-0. After Decatur turned the ball over, Kent Island added its second touchdown in the span of about four minutes to extend the lead to 21-0, which is all the Buccaneers would need.

Decatur mustered just 76 yards of total offense in the first half to go along with just four first downs. In the third quarter, however, the Seahawks got their game going on both sides of the ball, but it was a little too late. On the opening series of the third quarter, Decatur went 67 yards in seven plays culminating with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Teron Tyre to cut the lead to 21-7.

The Decatur defense stiffened during the third quarter, forcing three straight three-and-outs by the Kent Island offense. On the last one, Kent Island botched the punt snap and Decatur covered, setting up the offense on the Buccaneer 28-yard-line, but the Seahawks failed to score and turned the ball over on downs.

However, on its next offensive series, Decatur scored on a 17-yard touchdown run by D.J. Kee to cut the lead to 21-14. Kee finished the game with 146 rushing yards. Trailing by just a touchdown, Decatur got the ball back with just under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but Kent Island picked off a Seahawk pass and returned for a touchdown to settle the issue once and for all.

With the loss, Decatur’s season record fell to 1-2. The Seahawks look to rebound tonight with home game against winless James M. Bennett.
