Three Unbeatens Top Flag Standings

10/08/2010 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

OCEAN CITY- The Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department's Fall Flag Football League continued this week with a few familiar teams- Schell Brothers-Greene Turtle, Seacrets and Buxy's Salty Dog starting to pull away from the pack somewhat in the early part of the season.

After three weeks, Schell Brothers, Seacrets and Buxy's Salty Dog are each undefeated at 3-0 and sit atop the Fall Flag Football League standings. Three teams including Kirby's Pub, Alumni and Blue Ox area tied for second place with identical 1-2 records, while two others, FOP Lodge 10 and The Buoys, have yet to break into the win column. The following is a quick look at some of this week's action:

(bullet) Buxy's Salty Dog 12- Kirby's 6: In a match-up of old familiar flag football rivals from years past, Buxy's got the best of Kirby's after falling behind early. Kirby's jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Barry Snowden to Jemelle Jones. Buxy's then tied the game on an eight-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Draus to Adam Blaney. Buxy's then secured the win with the same quarterback-received combo when Draus hit Blaney with a five-yard touchdown pass.

(bullet) Schell Brothers-Greene Turtle 39- Alumni 0: Schell Brothers-Greene Turtle jumped all over the Alumni behind a big night by quarterback Ray Taranto, who hit four different receivers with TD passes. Taranto started with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Adam Rones, then hit Ron Strickler on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Taranto threw a 37-yard TD pass to Dan Kauffman to make it 19-0. Taranto's next scoring strike was a 17-yard pass to Kyle Swayngim to make it 27-0. He then threw two more touchdown passes to Strickler including a 33-yarder and an 18-yarder to round out the scoring in the 39-0 rout.

(bullet) Seacrets 26- FOP Lodge 18:

In a fairly close game, Seacrets remained unbeaten by beating the boys in blue. Antwaan Purnell got Seacrets on the board early with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown. The FOP responded quickly with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Allen Hawk to Todd Speigle, but the extra point was no good and Seacrets led 7-6. Seacrets' quarterback Ryan Gartland then hit Mike Kelley with a 15-yard TD pass to make it 14-6 and added a 15-yarder to Kelley and another 21-yard scoring strike to Steve Monroe to build the lead to 26-6. The FOP mounted a late comeback on a touchdown pass from Hawk to Speigle, followed by an eight-yard touchdown run by Speigle to cut the lead to 26-18, but the rally fell short and Seacrets prevailed after a Kelley interception.
