ASSATEAGUE – Worcester County Bureau of Investigation (WCBI) detectives this week are awaiting results on the identity and possible cause of death of an individual whose body was discovered on the beach on Assateague last Saturday.
Shortly after 3 p.m. last Saturday, a federal park ranger was patrolling the beach along the north end of the Assateague National Seashore when the ranger located the remains of an adult white male. WCBI detectives were contacted and responded to the area where the unidentified body was discovered to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation revealed that sometime in the 24 hours prior to the discovery, the body of a white male had washed up on the northern shore of Assateague Island in the area of the two-mile marker. According to police reports, the unidentified body was clothed only in a pair of Levi’s blue jeans and a black Patagonia belt. There was no identification discovered on the body.
According to information provided by police, the deceased was approximately 5’7” tall and weighed between 140 and 160 pounds. A check with local law enforcement agencies revealed there were no active reports on any missing person in the area, nor where there reports of missing crewmembers from any local vessels.
The remains were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for a complete autopsy and identification. As of late yesterday, the remains had not been identified. Anyone with information regarding the description given is urged to call WCBI at 410-352-3476, WCBI Cpl. J.
