7/27/2007 | By The Dispatch Staff

OCEAN CITY- Ocean City Police Department detectives were contacted by the Department of Social Services yesterday regarding a woman who was hospitalized at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Christy Freeman, 37, of Ocean City, was admitted to the hospital around 4:25 a.m. Thursday. Upon examination, medical personnel determined she was pregnant, but the child was missing.

After interviewing Freeman, officers obtained a search and seizure warrant for her Ocean City residence at 209 Sunset Drive. Around 9:55 p.m., detectives discovered a small infant wrapped in a blanket in the apartment. The child was not alive. The infant was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore to determine the cause of death.

Freeman was initially taken to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin by Ocean City EMS and then transferred to PRMC.

After conferring with Worcester County State's Attorney Joel Todd, resort police was charged Freeman with first-degree murder, second- degree murder, and manslaughter. The case is expected to be referred to the Grand Jury for a formal indictment.

Freeman lives at her residence with a boyfriend and her four other children.  This investigation is in its early stages and able to provide more information will be available later today. Freeman is expected to be released from the hospital later today and remain in police custody pending an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. The Dispatch website will have updates when they become available. See next Friday's Dispatch for the full story.
