BERLIN- Former Stephen Decatur wrestling standout Danny Miller, now a rising junior at the Naval Academy, represented his country well at the FILA Jr. World Championships in Romania last weekend, finishing seventh overall in his weight class.
Miller, who won three straight state championships at Decatur, has compiled a 26-17 record in two years at Navy including a 19-11 record this year. Navy requires its varsity wrestlers to do a certain amount of off-season wrestling and Miller this year chose to compete in the 2011 FILA World Team Trials in Indiana in May. The trials were a qualifying event for the FILA World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, which were held last weekend. Miller won his weight class at the FILA World Team Trials and represented the U.S. at the World Championships in Bucharest in the 120 Kg class, or roughly 265-pound class.
Miller went 2-2 overall last weekend at the Jr. World’s in Romania and finished seventh in his weight class. He won his first two matches, beating Victor Svetlitskin of Greece and Vadzim Shvedau of Belarus. Miller then lost to Teodore Evanoidze of Georgia in the quarterfinals. In his final match, Miller lost to Richard Csercsics of Hungary, 0-4 and 0-6, to finish seventh in his weight class.
As a team, the U.S. finished eighth overall out of the 25 countries represented with 25 total points. Russia was first with 56, followed by Georgia (50) and Iran (46).
