BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a mixed performance last week in the Warrior Duals at La Plata High in southern Maryland, going 3-5 over the two-day event against some of the top teams in the region.

The tournament was held last Wednesday and Thursday at La Plata and the field included some of the top programs in and around the southern Maryland region. In its tournament opener last Wednesday, Decatur routed McNamara, 78-6, to get off to a good start. Wins for the Seahawks included Jeff Evans (170), Ethan Eibl (182), Luke Bargar (220), Ryan Kail (285), Seth Goggin (106), Nate Rosenblatt (113), Logan Smith (120), Alford Hardy (126), Dakota Roderick (132), Jermaine Purnell (145), Kaelan Patterson (152) and Andrew Borradaile (160).

Also in the morning session on Day One of the tournament, the Seahawks beat Huntingtown, coached by former Decatur coach Kevin Gilligan, 39-32. Picking up wins in that match for Decatur were Luke Barger, Kail, Rosenblatt, Smith, Hardy, Roderick and Alex Schiffer. In the afternoon session last Wednesday, the Seahawks took their first loss of the tournament, falling to North Point, 38-24. The trend continued in the afternoon session when the Seahawks lost another close match, 35-34, to Perry Hall.

On the tournament’s second day last Thursday, Decatur lost two more very close matches during the morning session including a 33-28 loss to South River and a 36-29 loss to host La Plata. In the afternoon session on the final day, Decatur got back on the winning track, routing St. Mary’s Ryken, 65-9. However, the Seahawks dropped their final match of the tournament, falling to Winter’s Mill, 57-18, during the afternoon session last Thursday.
