Seahawks Fall in Region Title Game

5/23/2008 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- After dominating its first two state playoff opponents, Decatur's varsity softball team dropped a tough one to visiting Atholton, 6-3, at home last Saturday to put an end to what was a memorable season.

Decatur, the top-seed in the state's Class 3A-East region tournament, cruised past its two early round opponents by a combined score of 17-0 and it appeared the Seahawks were headed to a regional championship and a trip to the state's final four. Decatur beat Aberdeen 10-0 last Wednesday and followed that up with a 7-0 win over Fallston the next day.

The early sweep set up a match-up with second-seeded Atholton at Decatur last Saturday afternoon for the east region title, but it was not meant to be this year for the Seahawks. Atholton beat Decatur, 6-3, to win the region championship and put an end to what was a great run for the Seahawks.

Decatur went undefeated for much of the season, starting with 17 straight wins. The Seahawks were not only winning all of their games, they were winning them in impressive fashion with a stretch including the first four games of the year during which they outscored their opponents by a combined 66-0.

Dominating pitching and clutch hitting from up and down the line-up was the hallmark of the 2008 team as it cranked out win after impressive win. The Seahawks finally lost its first game of the season in the last game of the regular season, falling to visiting Mardela, 3-0, on May 5. The Seahawks then fell to Easton in the Bayside Conference championship game, but the late losses did not prevent Decatur from being the top seed in the Class 3A-East Region tournament.
