Coastal Lax Seeking Players for '09

1/23/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- With the goal of offering another option for young lacrosse players in the area, a group of dedicated and committed parents and local business people have formed the Coastal Lacrosse Club.

In its inaugural season, the Coastal Lacrosse Club will be offering league opportunities for boys and girls ages 7-14. In addition, the program will be volunteering with the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department to provide an early introduction of lacrosse skills for players picking up the sport for the first time, as well as boys and girls in Pre-K to 2nd grade. A U.S. Lacrosse-Level 1-certified coach will lead each team along with other coaches and volunteers.

Already, the Coastal Lacrosse Club is off to an amazing start in its inaugural season. So far, the club has reached out to the community with a clinic for boys of all ages at the Crown Sports Complex with the help of some amazing players from Salisbury University's NCAA Division III championship team. The club also hosted a successful holiday social at the Green Turtle North and recently participated in the Lax Play Day in conjunction with the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department that attracted over 150 local young players from ages Pre-K to 8th grade.

The Coastal Lacrosse Club is a member of the Delaware Youth Lacrosse Foundation, a regional chapter of U.S. Lacrosse.  The mission statement clearly states what the Coastal Lacrosse Club is all about. The club will offer instructional and developmental programs for boys and girls of all ages.

The coaches and volunteers are committed to providing a uniform and organized program, emphasizing the basic and finer skills and strategies of the sport in order to prepare the player to compete at the next level. Players at all skill levels will have the opportunity to develop their game in a positive environment that promotes teamwork, fair play, good sportsmanship and lots of fun.

The season will begin in March of 2009. The club will participate in a 12 game schedule, which will include both home and away games. All games will be played on Sundays. Practices will begin in early March, and will end with an exciting round robin league tournament held at the end of May.

In order to maintain a low player to coach ratio, the club will limit the number of players per team.  This will allow coaches to provide more individualized instruction and guarantee playing time to each player on the team.  Teams will be formed solely on a first come-first serve basis and are open to players from all areas of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.  Divisions will be created based on the total number of registrations received for each age group.

The club is in need of young boys and girls interested in participating to fill out their rosters for the upcoming season, which will get underway in March, and thus far, the response has been overwhelming, according to club officials. Registration for the 2009 spring season is currently being accepted.  For registration information, please access Coastal Lacrosse Club's website at www.coastallaxclub.com.
