Decatur Softball Off to Fast Start

4/03/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's girls' varsity softball team stayed on a big roll this week, beating county rival Snow Hill, 17-1, on Monday to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

The Seahawks have dominated each of their first three games thus far in 2009, riding the hot arm of sophomore pitcher Maddie Justice and getting production from up and down the line-up to rout each of their first three opponents. It started with a 22-0 rout of Crisfield last Tuesday in the season opener and continued last Friday with a 9-0 shutout over Cambridge-South Dorchester.

On Monday, Decatur did give up its first run of the season, but hammered host Snow Hill, 17-1. After three games, the Seahawks have allowed just one run and have outscored their opponents, 48-1. At the center of the big early run has been pitcher Maddie Justice, who picked up the win in each of Seahawks' first three games.

On Monday, Justice allowed just three hits and struck out six to easily beat the Eagles. She also helped her own cause, collecting four hits at the plate. Against Cambridge-South Dorchester last Friday, Justice was nearly perfect, scattering three hits while striking out 12. Decatur plays Wicomico High at home on Monday, followed by another home game against Bennett on Tuesday.
