Seahawks Mauled by Lions, 36-8

10/02/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity football team ran into a buzz saw last weekend, falling to a solid Queen Anne's team, 36-8, after playing the Lions tight for at least one quarter.

The Seahawks played Queen Anne's to a scoreless first quarter although the Lions had two touchdowns taken off the board by untimely penalties. On the first play of the second quarter, however, on a 31-yard touchdown run to break the ice and take a 7-0 lead. With six minutes left in the second quarter, Queen Anne's scored again, this time on a 30-yard touchdown pass, to extend the lead to 14-0. The lead was extended to 16-0 just before the half when a Decatur snap on a punt sailed over the kicker's head and was recovered in the end zone by Queen Anne's for a safety.

The score remained 16-0 for much of the third quarter as both teams settled down. However, Queen Anne's scored a touchdown with less than a minute left in the third and added another touchdown just four minutes into the fourth to settle the issue once and for all.

Decatur avoided a shutout with a touchdown with just over seven minutes left in the game. Quarteback Tyler Hartrim hit Kyle Leslie on a 22-yard scoring strike to cut the lead to 30-6, then hit Tyler Boyle on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt to make it 30-8, but time was not on Decatur's side. Queen Anne's then went on a nine-play, 75-yard drive to kill much of what was left of the fourth quarter and punctuated its dominating effort with a final touchdown to make it 36-8.

The Seahawks' record now stands even at 2-2 after back-to-back losses to North Caroline two weeks ago and now Queen Anne's. Decatur won its first two games of the year, beating Rising Sun and Washington. The Seahawks hit the road tonight for another Bayside Conference game against Kent Island.
