Decatur Teams Bow Out of States

11/06/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- In the span of about 24 hours late last week, three of Stephen Decatur's fall sports teams bowed out of their respective state playoff runs, providing a quiet ending for otherwise successful campaigns.

It started last Thursday when the Decatur girls' varsity soccer team fell to Hebron, 2-0, in the opening round of the state Class 3A-East regional playoffs. The Seahawks finished the regular season with a 6-5 record and earned a number-eight seed in the Class 3A-East region. However, the Decatur girls couldn't muster any real offensive threat and fell to ninth-seeded Hebron in the first round.

On Friday, a nearly identical scenario unfolded for the Decatur boys' varsity soccer team and ended with the same outcome. The Seahawks also finished the regular season with a 6-5 record and earned a number-nine seed in the 3A-East region. Decatur also faced eighth-seeded Hebron in the first round and fell, 4-0, to close out the season.

Finally, the Decatur varsity field hockey team struggled somewhat this season, finishing with a 3-8-1 regular season mark, but was seeded seventh in the Class 3A-South region. The Seahawks had a first-round bye, but faced second-seeded Huntingtown in the second round and fell on the road, 2-0, to close out the 2009 campaign.
