Friday, April 16--10-Year Sentence for Stabbing Incident

4/16/2010 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

SNOW HILL- A Grasonville, Md. man arrested in June on attempted murder and other serious charges after stabbing two men during a fight at a downtown Ocean City parking lot pleaded guilty this week in Circuit Court to one count of second-degree assault and was sentenced to 10 years in jail, most of which was then suspended.

Just before midnight on June 8, a private citizen informed Ocean City police there was a fight in progress in the parking lot at 7 Atlantic Ave. As officers approached the area of the reported fight, they learned two individuals had been stabbed and the suspect had fled on foot.

The suspect, later identified as Randy Lopez-Medina, 23, of Grasonville, Md., was able to elude OCPD officers after a chase on foot. Ocean City police, with the assistance of the Maryland State Police, broadcasted a description of the suspect and were eventually able to locate Lopez-Medina in the area of 7th Street and the Boardwalk. He was eventually taken into custody without further incident.

The two victims were treated first at the scene by Ocean City EMS and later transported to the hospital. One victim received a slash wound across his upper back and a large wound to his left shoulder. The second victim suffered stab wounds to his chest, possibly puncturing his lung. No updates were provided about the condition of the victims.

Lopez-Medina was arrested on 11 total charges related to the attacks including two counts each of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and malicious destruction of property. He also faces one count of carrying a dangerous weapon with intent to injure.

On Monday in Worcester County Circuit Court, Lopez-Medina pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault and was sentenced to 10 years in jail. All but one year of his sentence was then suspended and he was fined $500. Lopez-Medina was also ordered to pay nearly $900 in restitution to one of the victims in the attack.

As a result of Lopez-Medina's plea bargain, 10 other charges against him were not prosecuted including two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of malicious destruction of property and one count of carrying a deadly weapon with intent to injure.
